Hello! I'm Lisa Anderson
A self-taught seamstress and licensed K–12 art and special education teacher based in Peoria.
I was first introduced to sewing in high school through Home Economics and clothing classes, where I learned the basics. While those skills stayed with me, it wasn’t until nearly ten years later that I truly fell in love with sewing. What started as a creative necessity quickly became a passion. As I began designing and making costumes, I found that the more specific and elaborate my ideas became, the harder it was to rely on store-bought or thrifted pieces. So, I dusted off my sewing machine, dove into tutorials, and taught myself how to sew.
Costuming turned out to be the perfect place to begin. There is always a deadline, and you have to make things work with what you have. From there, I started working with commercial sewing patterns and realized I could make my own clothes. That discovery opened up an entirely new world. Sewing has also deepened my understanding of fabric quality, garment construction, and the realities of the fashion industry, including fast fashion. Now, when I choose to buy clothing or textiles, I know what is built to last and what is not.
Alongside sewing, teaching has always been a central part of my life. I have worked in education since 2010 with students ranging from preschool through high school. I hold a master’s degree in education and have taught in a variety of settings, including classrooms and summer camps. I am passionate about helping students explore their creativity in a supportive, inclusive environment where they can build both technical skills and artistic confidence.
When I am not teaching or sewing, you will usually find me painting, photography, gardening, or spending time with my friends, family, and my two dogs.
